Healthy People 2000 Review 1998-99

The latest report from the government's Healthy People Initiative shows mortality rates down for all targeted age groups, with significant declines in infant mortality rates throughout the nineties and a continuing decline in the mortality rates of those aged 15-24. According to the report, 59% of the objectives for Healthy People, 2000 have been met or are proceeding on schedule. However, "the report also shows that a fifth of the Healthy People objectives are moving away from their targets." For instance, some key objectives, such as reducing the number of overweight individuals and increasing physical activity "have either moved in the wrong direction or improved little." The National Center for Health Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prepared the report. For more on the Healthy People, 2010 Initiative, the initiative that succeeds Healthy People 2000, see the September 18, 1998 Scout Report. [DC]
